What is Turmeric ?
Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow colour. The active ingredient Curcumin comes from the rhizome of the plant.
Curcumin has been used extensively in India in Auyurvedic medicine for centuries as it is non toxic and has a variety of therapeutic properties including antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic activity, and anticarcinogenic activity.
Many studies indicate that chronic, low-grade inflammation may be a key factor in developing conditions like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
In test-tube and animal studies, curcumin has been shown to block certain biological pathways leading to inflammation.
The Curcumin content of turmeric as a spice is not that high and you would have to consume significant amounts to get the desired anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
To experience the really therapeutic effects of turmeric you need to take it condensed in the form of a supplement.
As well as this Curcumin itself is hard for the body to break down, therefore you need to mix it with something that makes it bio-available or fat soluble to get the most benefit.
That’s why we combine our turmeric and curcumin with black pepper or piperine which has been shown to enhance the absorption of curcumin by 2000% or up to 20x
Our High Strength Turmeric with Black Pepper is Organic for quality and efficacy, suitable for Vegans & Vegetarians is GMP certified and made in the UK.
Based on the research we recommend a minimum of two of our turmeric capsules a day.
Side effects:
Turmeric is currently listed by the United States Food and Administration (FDA) as “generally recognised as safe” however children under 12 years and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding shouldn’t take turmeric, as its safety in these groups hasn’t been proven. Turmeric or any other herbal medicine should not be taken if you have kidney or liver disease as well as this if taking an anticoagulant such as warfarin you should consult your GP before starting any other medication.
Why do we recommend Turmeric to our patients?
Pain and inflammatory conditions are often the main or underlying reasons why people seek medical care, and such conditions become more common with ageing.
Unfortunately, much of the currently available pain relief medications such as Opioids like Codeine and non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen and paracetamol, while effective, have use-limiting adverse effects on Gastro-intestinal, kidney, liver or cardio-vascular systems. Often these analgesics by their nature are require regular use which increases the risk of adverse effects as well as the additional problem of misuse and abuse associated particularly with opioids. Thus, more analgesic options are needed.
Some of the oldest medical systems (Ayurvedic medicine) use Turmeric for the management of Musculo-skeletal type pain. There is extensive evidence for the use of Turmeric for muscle and joint pain. In a review of the current evidence in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics they found the following.
A study in Belgium asked GPs to give Turmeric to over 2,800 of their patients suffering from Osteo-arthritis and using prescriptive analgesics such as Anti -Inflammatory or Opioid analgesics (NSAID’s). The physicians prescribed Turmeric and after six weeks found that participants reported an improvement in pain levels, joint mobility, and quality of life. The dose used in this study, similar to two capsules of our turmeric a day was tolerated by all patents and more than half of them were able to discontinue concomitant use of analgesic, anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective drugs. The study reported that the Turmeric formulation is effective for joint pain and oedema associated with osteoarthritis.
The results also suggested a potential positive effect on cartilage regeneration, with clinical improvement maintained for up to six months, despite the reduction in concomitant use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Further studies have shown that Turmeric is effective as a post operative supplement to analgesic pain relief for example in Gall Bladder removal one study found that at 3 weeks post op all the patients on Turmeric were pain free and the analgesic use by patints taking Turmeric was significantly lower than those on the control.
In a study looking as post-surgical hernia repair it was found that Turmeric proved to be superior in reducing post op inflammation according to the four parameters assessed. Overall Turmeric was found to be a safer and better anti-inflammatory agent.
Our Turmeric has been formulated with the above research in mind to make sure it is the most effective it can be at reducing inflammation and pain.
